The first month as a charity trustee can feel overwhelming. You are suddenly responsible for the strategic direction, financial health, and legal compliance of an organisation. But with the right approach, these initial 30 days can set the foundation for a highly impactful tenure.
Start by understanding your charity’s governing document — this is your constitution. Meet the staff team, review the latest financial reports, and understand the strategic plan. Ask questions freely; there is no such thing as a naive question when you are fulfilling your fiduciary duty.
Remember: your role is strategic, not operational. You are there to ensure the charity delivers on its mission while remaining compliant with Charity Commission requirements. My book “How to Become a Charity Trustee” covers all of these aspects in greater detail.
