Magistrates handle around 95% of all criminal cases in England and Wales. They are ordinary citizens who volunteer their time to deliver justice in their local communities. Yet despite this enormous responsibility, the magistracy remains one of the least understood public service roles.
Many people do not realise that you do not need a legal background to become a magistrate. What the system needs is people with good judgment, common sense, and a commitment to fairness. The Judicial Appointments Commission actively seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds to ensure the bench reflects the community it serves.
If you have ever thought about contributing to justice in your community, I encourage you to explore the magistracy. My books, “The Act of Service” and “How to Become a Magistrate,” provide a complete guide, from application to sitting on the bench.
